The Effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation Techniques on Sleep Quality students

Abstract

Sleep is one of the physiological needs of humans that functions for the body’s recovery process. Students are one of the populations with a high prevalence of sleep problems. Purpose : Knowing the effect of progressive muscle relaxation techniques on the sleep quality of students at Stikes Husada Mandiri Poso. Research Method : This research is a quasi-experiment with pretest and posttest with control group design.The sampling technique is stratified proportional random sampling involving 64 respondents divided into 2 groups : the intervention group (doing progressive muscle relaxation for 4 days) and group controls (doing standar interventions : listening to musical instruments) with 32 respondents each. The sleep quality is measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The level of significance in study was 95% (p<0,05). Research Result : The test result of Paired Sample T Test showed a significant difference in the quality of sleep before and after progressive muscle relaxation (p=0,000). Independent Sample T Test result showed no significant difference between the sleep quality of the intervention group and the control group after the posttest (p=0,048). Conclusion : There is an effect of progressive muscle relaxation techniques on students sleep quality. Progressive muscle relaxation can activate the parasympathtic nerve to stimulate the hypothalamus to produce serotonin which can cause sleep. Progressive muscle relaxation techniques can be used as an alternative intervention to improve sleep quality.
